Zander Roseborough Mrs. Vansickle English 8 February 2018 8th Grade Project Have you ever wished bees were gone, out of your hair? Well now they are and it is going to cause lots of problems. Lots of bees are dying off because of mites, insecticides, and climate change. Now that bees are dying off, plants won’t get the pollination they need, and those beautiful flowers will all die off. Along with that all of humanity. Bees are dying off at an alarming rate. To begin, what is causing bees to disappear? Mites are one off the main causes of bee deaths. They are little tiny bugs about the size of a period. They feed off of the bees hem lymph. They also spread disease and reduce the bee’s life span. If a hive is not taken care of and has mites, the mites can take out the whole hive, in about three years. Mites have different stages and when they mature that is when they attach to a bee. Mites can attach to a bee as a larva. When the queen lays an egg the mites can fall in and attach. Mites cause too much damage and need to be stopped. (Moore) The other big killer of bees is insecticide. It is what farmers use to spray on their crops to kill pests eating at the crops. It’s easy to understand why they need to do it but it kills lots of bees. Many of the insecticides are extremely toxic for bees. Many of the insecticides being marketed have the required time but are safer for bees. If we don’t have bees we wont have the pollination we need to keep those crops alive. As a beekeeper, we like to put our bees next to field and if bees aren’t alive all that will happen. Those fruits and veggies at the stores will get cut down to half of what is in there now. Also those famers won’t be making enough money to keep the business running, so after all the bees die off we won’t have good farms anymore. (Protecting pollination from pesticides) For bees climate change is crazy. It kills about 33 percent of bees every year. The way climate change kills bees is it raises the co2 levels and when the co2 levels raise the bees need to eat more and it shortens their life span. The bees can’t get enough food to feed themselves and work so they end up dying. This is also causing beekeepers to have to replace 50 percent of the hives every year. This is the same with mites and insecticides. (Palmer) In addition, what is this going to do the environment? When the bees die off it is going to kill plants, crops, humans, and animals! If we lose our bees we wont have crops. When you walk in to the super market the fruits and veggies you love will be cut down to at least half of what we have today. The farmers will not get to do what they love because they will lose all their money and will not have beautiful farm land.(Palmer) Along with that the plants will die. They will lose 90 percent of our beautiful flowers and plants they love. Then all of the seven billion people will struggle to survive. That will lead to what we will talk about next. All of humanity will die. When the crops and flowers die people will have to eat animals and when they die people will be forced to eat canned foods for the rest of our life. (what would happen to bees if they went extinct) Next, what can we do to help? One way beekeepers try and help with mites is they take a paper towel covered in medication and place it in the middle of the box. Bees hate new things in the box so they bite at it to try and get rid of it, that is how they end up getting medication for the mites. A new thing scientist have tried is a barrier. It is on the walls and let out the medication for the bees but they don’t want it to interfere with the traffic of the bees coming in and out. They need it to send out the right amount of medication for the bees. (Higes) They need to quit spraying insecticides. One thing we could do is buy the new pesticides being marketed. “They have the right amount of time required for the pests, but it isn’t as strong so it is safer for the bees.” They need to wait till after the bloom when the flowers plants and what ever else have lost their pedals. That way bees will not be as attracted to the flower. (Johansen) Quit cutting down the rain forest! The climate change is killing off lots of the bees. The climate change is raising the co2 levels. That is causing bees to have to eat more making their life span shorter. The climate change is also causing bees to die because the pollination is not adapting to the climate change. The bees aren’t moving to new areas fast enough so they are dying off. (Worland) In conclusion, bees are disappearing at an alarming rate. Our bees are dying off because of mites, insecticides, and climate change. The mites are little pests that feed off of the bees. We don’t have a cure for it quite yet. Insecticides are what farmers use on their crops to kill pest but it also kills bees. Our bees are dying off. The problem with this is it is going to kill everything. Such as plants, crops, and all of humanity. When bees die off the crops and plants will die because they aren’t getting the pollination they need. Then humans will run out of food and so will animals. How can we help the bees? With the mites we have been working on a cure for years. Insecticides we can help a little by, buying the insecticides being marketed today because they are safer for bees. The climate change we can help by stopping the cutting down of the rain forest. Its time to start paying more attention to our bees or all of humanity is jeopardized.
